What the Real ID Deadline Means for Private Aviation – And Why Now Is the Time to Prepare

On May 7, 2025, the United States will begin enforcing the REAL ID Act - a federal law requiring all domestic air travelers aged 18 or older to present REAL ID-compliant identification to board an aircraft.

This applies to all passengers flying domestically - including those traveling on private jets.

Whether you're flying from a commercial terminal or boarding at a private FBO, the identification rules are the same.

Here's what you need to know - and how to prepare if you fly with PorterJets or any other private aviation provider.

What Is REAL ID - and Why Now?

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to improve the security of state-issued identification. After multiple extensions, the Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that enforcement will begin May 7, 2025.

Accepted forms of ID starting that date include:

  • A REAL ID-compliant driver's license or state ID (look for the star in the top corner)

  • A valid passport (U.S. or foreign)

  • DHS-approved alternative documents like a Global Entry card or military ID

If you present a standard driver's license without the REAL ID mark, you will not be allowed to board, even for a private charter flight.

Does REAL ID Apply to Private Jet Travelers?

 Yes - it does.

Contrary to some early misconceptions, the REAL ID requirement is not limited to commercial airline passengers.

It applies to all air travelers boarding within the U.S., including those:

  • Flying charter

  • Flying under jet card programs

  • Departing from private FBO terminals

TSA has confirmed that all travelers flying domestically must present compliant ID starting May 7 – regardless of aircraft type or departure location.

What This Means for PorterJets Clients

If you're planning to fly private with us after May 7, 2025, make sure:

  • Your ID is REAL ID-compliant

  • Or you have a valid passport or DHS-approved alternative

  • All passengers in your group 18+ meet the same requirement

Need help verifying your ID status? Our team can guide you through what's required and assist with document checks before your trip.

Why Private Travel Still Offers a Major Advantage

While REAL ID adds a layer of compliance for all travelers, private jet charter still eliminates the rest of the friction:

  • No long TSA lines

  • No crowded commercial terminals

  • No unpredictable delays or layovers

  • A quiet, secure experience tailored entirely to your preferences

Even with REAL ID in place, flying private remains the most seamless way to move - especially when time, privacy, and precision matter most.

Final Thoughts

REAL ID enforcement is now just months away - and for the first time, it affects every air traveler, including those who fly private.

At PorterJets, we're already working with clients to ensure documentation is ready.

Because when the day comes, your only focus should be where you're going - not whether you're cleared to board.
